Central to the new Five Towns Park Development is the provision of a new stadium for the Castleford Tigers.
As they have played at Wheldon Road for 90 years, it is essential that the design of the new stadium captures the history of the club but also embraces the new technologies available to enhance the club’s experience in this new venue.
This design journey progressed a little further on the 11th March 2016 when GMI organised a Stadium review with its designers, the club and also involved students from the nearby Wakefield College.
Starting the day at the existing ground, the team saw how the club is making the most of their current location. However, many of the facilities are old and are coming to the end of their usable lives.
It was then on to Chesterfield, where we saw their new stadium. Constructed 4 years ago, this state of the art stadium, gave an insight into what is possible and what lessons could be learned from their experience. They too moved from a 100 year old stadium and have found the experience enhances both the on pitch performance, and the off pitch commercial opportunities.
GMI have asked for the students’ input in order to capture the input of a wider cross section of the community and all age ranges that will use the facilities.
