As part of the Planning Condition obligations, the development needed to carry out these works. However, GMI have also used this activity as a learning experience in order to promote the construction industry, highlight the history of the site and the local area and to continue their engagement activities.
Students from Airedale Academy, apprentices from Together Housing and the local Wakefield Historical Society were all shown the excavation works and some of the finds uncovered to date. They also learned of the connections made to the Castleford Fort and the Roman route to York in the North.
Part of the visit, also concentrated on the construction and industrial processes used by the Romans and Iron Age settlers and how their technologies were far more advanced than we may think.
Further visits are planned prior to construction works commencing later in the year.
